Have you always wanted to learn more about the national symbols of England including what England’s national flower is? If so, then you have come to the right place, as I will be more than happy to assist you with this. England’s national flower is the Tudor rose, and this particular flower is considered by many to be quite stunningly beautiful.

England’s national flower certainly has a rich and interesting history. A Tudor rose is a rose that is half white and half red. Historically, it served as a symbol to mark the end of the famous War of the Roses. The Tudor rose also serves as a representation of the marriage between the House of York and the House of Lancaster which occurred after the War of the Roses had ceased. Although as I mentioned before the Tudor rose started out as half white and half red, nowadays the national flower for England is often shown as simply a solid red rose. White roses are also used at various events in England occasionally. Of note, you may find it interesting to learn that red roses are a symbol for Lancashire, and white roses are known to symbolize Yorkshire.

The War of the Roses first came about as a long, drawn out civil war between the House of York and the House of Lancaster. As a matter of fact, the War of the Roses lasted approximately 32 years! Henry VII from the House of Lancaster and King Richard III from the House of York battled it out on Bosworth Field in 1485, with Henry VII declared as the winner. This victory then made it possible for Henry VII to lay claim to England’s throne, and from that point forward, he became known as King Henry VII. King Henry VII then went on to marry Elizabeth of York which gave him even greater claim to the House of York. It was then that England’s national flower the Tudor rose was born. The reason for this is that the blending of the House of York and the House of Lancaster resulted in a Tudor Rose emblem being developed.

The red rose is also used nowadays in England as the symbol of the Rugby Football Union as well as the Rugby Football League. Of note, both teams were founded right around the same time, with the Rugby Football League being formed shortly after the Rugby Football Union. Many people in England also utilized roses in various ways to help celebrate St. George’s Day. Thank you for taking the time to read this article, and I hope that you have found the information that I have shared with you on the national flower of England to be both interesting and informative.

The United Kingdom (UK) is comprised of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. It is important not only to be aware of these geographical distinctions but also the strong sense of identity and nationalism felt by the populations of these four countries.

The terms ‘English’ and ‘British’ are not interchangeable. ‘British’ denotes someone who is from England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. ‘English’ refers to people from England. People from Scotland are referred to as ‘Scots’. People from England are not likely to take offence at being called “English”, whereas a Welsh, Scots, or Northern Irish person will.

Cultural Diversity

Formerly a very homogenous society, since World War II, Britain has become increasingly diverse as it has accommodated large immigrant populations. The mixture of ethnic groups and cultures make it difficult to define British as looking or acting in one particular manner. People may sound British and retain the cultural heritage of their forefathers while others may become more British than someone who can trace his/her lineage to the 5th century. The fact that the nation’s favourite dish is now a curry sums up the cultural mish-mash that is modern day Britain.

Doing business in the UK

The British are rather formal. Many from the older generation still prefer to work with people and companies they know or who are known to their associates. Younger businesspeople do not need long-standing personal relationships before they do business with people and do not require an intermediary to make business introductions. Nonetheless, networking and relationship building are often key to long-term business success.

Rank is respected and businesspeople prefer to deal with people at their level. If at all possible, include an elder statesman on your team as he/she will present the aura of authority that is necessary to good business relationships in many companies.

British communication styles

The British have an interesting mix of communication styles encompassing both understatement and direct communication. Many older businesspeople or those from the ‘upper class’ rely heavily upon formal use of established protocol. Most British are masters of understatement and do not use effusive language. If anything, they have a marked tendency to qualify their statements with such as ‘perhaps’ or ‘it could be’. When communicating with people they see as equal to themselves in rank or class, the British are direct, but modest. If communicating with someone they know well, their style may be more informal, although they will still be reserved.

Business meetings

Punctuality is a very British trait. It is especially important in business situations. In most cases, the people you are meeting will be on time. Always call if you will be even 5 minutes later than agreed. If you are kept waiting a few minutes, do not make an issue of it.

How meetings are conducted is often determined by the composition of people attending. If everyone is at the same level, there is generally a free flow of ideas and opinions. If there is a senior ranking person in the room, that person will do most of the speaking. In general, meetings will be rather formal and always have a clearly defined purpose, which may include an agenda. There will be a brief amount of small talk before getting down to the business at hand. If you make a presentation, avoid making exaggerated claims. Make certain your presentation and any materials provided appear professional and well thought out. Be prepared to back up your claims with facts and figures. The British rely on facts, rather than emotions, to make decisions. Maintain eye contact and a few feet of personal space. After a meeting, send a letter summarising what was decided and the next steps to be taken.

Basic Etiquette Tips:

Business Dress

* Business attire is conservative.

* Men should wear a dark coloured, conservative business suit.

* Women should wear either a business suit or a conservative dress.

Greetings

* Shake hands with everyone at a meeting upon arrival.

* Maintain eye contact during the greeting.

Titles

* Only medical doctors and the clergy use their professional or academic titles in business.

* Most people use the courtesy titles or Mr, Mrs or Miss and their surname. (Mr and Mrs are words in the United Kingdom and do not require a period after them as they are not abbreviations.)

* If someone has been knighted, they are called ‘Sir’ followed by their first and surnames or ‘Sir’ followed simply by their first name.

* Wait until invited before moving to a first-name basis. People under the age of 35 may make this move more rapidly than older British.

Business Cards

* Business cards are exchanged at the initial introduction without formal ritual.

* The business card may be put away with only a cursory glance.

Business Gifts

* Business gift giving is not part of the business culture.

* If you choose to give a gift, make certain it is small and tasteful.

* Good gifts include desk accessories, a paperweight with your company logo, or a book about your home country.

* Inviting someone out for a meal can be viewed as a gift.

If you are planning an overseas vacation, this may be the ideal time to visit England. However, if you wish to go outside of the period in which the Olympics are being held, there are still many attractions to see and things to do.

There are many attractions which are associated with England and which are known all over the world. Among the more famous ones are Big Ben, Harrods, Hyde Park, Buckingham Palace, Stonehenge, Madam Tussaud’s Wax Museum and the Globe Theatre. There is something for everyone in an English vacation.

If you are interested in gardens and parks, England has some of the more celebrated gardens worthy of a visit. Many of these are designated heritage sites and boasts acres of beautiful gardens and a historical house or two. Among the more famous houses which could be included in your itinerary is Chatsworth House with over 300 years of gardening. Sissinghurst Castle Garden is another must see for garden lovers. It is known to be among the most romantic of English gardens and is the most visited. Its White Garden is world famous.

Stonehenge is probably the image best associated with England. It is located in the English county of Wiltshire and is probably the best known attraction located outside of London. It is a prehistoric stone circle which is believed to have been constructed around 3100BC. There continues to be a mystery as to why the stones were placed in the pattern in which they exist. It is widely believed that it was a center for pagan worship. It continues to be a much loved site in England.

For nature lovers, the Lake District and Windermere Lake is a must see. It is the largest natural lake in England and is 2 miles long, one mile wide and 220 feet deep. The countryside surrounding Lake Windermere offers serious hiking opportunities for nature lovers. The area is also associated with well known children’s author and artist Beatrix Potter.

It would be inconceivable to visit England without sampling the various attractions in London. If you have a taste for high end shopping, a visit to Harrods is in order. If you wish to visit the various art galleries and museums, then the British Museum houses possibly the best Egyptology and the largest African collection in the world. An additional plus is that the visit is free.

England as a travel destination can offer many attractions which can make your vacation a most memorable one. If you do visit England for your vacation, you will be pleased to know that it has one of the best train networks in the world and so you will be able to travel around the country using the train in addition to other modes of transportation.

England is one of the most historically interesting and vibrant countries anywhere in the world. That is why those heading on a vacation to England should visit some of the prime historical sites as part of their trip. With imposing castles, magnificent country estates and fascinating museums history buffs will certainly be entertained whilst visiting England; whether travelling on your own, as a couple or with the family it is hoped that the details of the following sights will give tourists essential vacation ideas.

A vacation in England should also include a visit to the historic city of Bath. This city lying in Somerset has an amazing history from Celtic and Roman times up until the Victorian period. Because of the natural springs present within the city the Romans built up a considerable spa settlement, today some of these baths remain and are must see for travellers, although taking a dip in the waters is not allowed. During the Georgian period the city built up as a considerable spa resort, enticing those from London to ‘take the waters’, meaning that Bath toady has a large amount of sumptuous architecture and an air of luxury.

England has a rich spiritual heritage and as such there are various sites that should be visited whilst on vacation that will give an insight into this history. Naturally the most famous of these spiritual sights is in Canterbury. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site it is the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, the leader of the Church of England. Canterbury has played host to some of the most tumultuous events in British history, the most infamous probably being the murder of Thomas Becket, at the supposed orders of King Henry II, although conjecture still exists as to whether the king really did want his former best friend dead.

Another brilliant attraction worth visiting whilst on a vacation in England is Blenheim Palace. Built in the eighteenth century for the Earl of Marlborough,John Churchill and named after his greatest victory it represents the country’s gratitude for Churchill’s military exploits. To find a grander palace anywhere else in the nation would be difficult, as the home of the Churchill family for three hundred years, it was also the home of a famous modern Churchill, Winston, who once again led the country in a war on the continent.

When accidents happen, they can be costly to you as you could suffer loss of earnings depending on how long you’re off work. Since the majority of companies only allow a certain amount of time off sick before they stop paying you wages, this can lead to financial difficulties fairly quickly. However, thanks to the new legislations that were introduced to allow you to make an accident claim both easier and quicker, this need not be the case.

Many people are dissuaded from making a claim as they feel it is their fault, and that claiming any sort of monetary recompense is morally wrong. However, think of it this way if you’re shopping in a store and you knock something over and break it, you immediately offer to pay for it, as you were at fault, not the shop owner. This is exactly the same as being involved in an accident you are the damaged item, so the other person should be paying for your repair.

Once you’ve decided to make a claim, you should see a specialist solicitor whose field of expertise is in accident claims. Not only will he or she know whether you’re applicable for a claim itself, but they can also advise you of how much you should be looking to settle for. Don’t be afraid to ask for their credentials and success rates in similar cases if they are of reputable concern, they will happily show you this information. Although it may take time and not be without a little suffering, the end result will be worth it in the end and help ease both the physical and emotional impact and accident can have on you.

If you’ve been in an accident which was not your fault Camps Solicitors can help you claim personal injury compensation. Their personal injury solicitors have one of the highest success rates in the UK for compensation claims. With over 25 years experience of working with the victims of non-fault accidents means that whatever the circumstances of your accident, from a minor fall to a serious car crash, their solicitors have the legal knowledge and expertise to help you. As one of the leading firms offering legal services and advice to the victims of personal injuries, they handle thousands of cases ever year.

Call them now to speak to an advisor, their phones are manned throughout the day, so if you still have any questions that are not answered in the pages on this site, call them, or use their claims form.
